The Solo Founder's AI Stack: $500/Month Setup

I run a $2M ARR SaaS company. Zero employees. One AI stack. Here's exactly what I pay for and why each tool earns its place.

The Philosophy

Most founders over-tool. They buy 20 subscriptions and use 3. My rule: every tool must save me 10+ hours/month or generate measurable revenue.

Total budget: $500/month. Not because I'm cheap — because constraints force good decisions.

The Stack

1. Claude Code (Anthropic) — $20/month

What it does: My senior engineer.

Daily workflow:

  • Evening: "Write tests for today's code"

Time saved: 25 hours/week of coding

Cost: $20/month

ROI: $150/hour × 100 hours = $15,000 value/month

The catch: It writes code that works, not code that's elegant. I spend 2 hours/week refactoring. Still worth it.

2. Cursor (Anysphere) — $20/month

What it does: My code editor with AI pair programming.

Why not just Claude Code? Cursor is for real-time coding. Claude Code is for architecture and complex tasks. I use both — Cursor for typing, Claude for thinking.

Time saved: 10 hours/week

Cost: $20/month

ROI: $150/hour × 40 hours = $6,000 value/month

3. Perplexity Pro — $20/month

What it does: My research assistant.

Daily workflow:

  • "Find me the top 5 papers on LLM evaluation metrics"

Why not Google? Perplexity cites sources, synthesizes multiple perspectives, and doesn't show ads. Research that took 2 hours now takes 10 minutes.

Time saved: 8 hours/week

Cost: $20/month

ROI: $100/hour × 32 hours = $3,200 value/month

4. Notion AI — $10/month

What it does: My content manager and knowledge base.

Workflow:

  • Project planning (AI breaks down epics)

Time saved: 6 hours/week

Cost: $10/month

ROI: $100/hour × 24 hours = $2,400 value/month

5. ElevenLabs — $22/month

What it does: My voice for content.

Use case: I write scripts, ElevenLabs generates voiceovers for YouTube and podcast intros. Sounds natural enough that listeners don't know it's AI.

Time saved: 4 hours/week (no recording studio)

Cost: $22/month

ROI: $100/hour × 16 hours = $1,600 value/month

6. Midjourney — $30/month

What it does: My designer for marketing assets.

Workflow:

  • Presentation slides

Time saved: 5 hours/week

Cost: $30/month

ROI: $75/hour × 20 hours = $1,500 value/month

7. Zapier + AI — $50/month

What it does: My operations team.

Automated workflows:

  • Content published → social media cross-posting

Time saved: 10 hours/week

Cost: $50/month

ROI: $75/hour × 40 hours = $3,000 value/month

8. ChatGPT Plus — $20/month

What it does: My generalist consultant.

Use cases:

  • Learning new concepts quickly

Time saved: 5 hours/week

Cost: $20/month

ROI: $100/hour × 20 hours = $2,000 value/month

9. Replit — $7/month

What it does: My quick prototyping environment.

Use case: Test ideas before building in production. Spin up a Python script, test an API integration, validate a concept in 10 minutes.

Time saved: 3 hours/week

Cost: $7/month

ROI: $150/hour × 12 hours = $1,800 value/month

10. Descript — $15/month

What it does: My video editor.

Workflow:

  • AI suggests cuts for pacing

Time saved: 6 hours/week

Cost: $15/month

ROI: $75/hour × 24 hours = $1,800 value/month

The Numbers

| Tool | Cost | Hours Saved/Week | Value/Month |

|------|------|-------------------|-------------|

| Claude Code | $20 | 25 | $15,000 |

| Cursor | $20 | 10 | $6,000 |

| Perplexity | $20 | 8 | $3,200 |

| Notion AI | $10 | 6 | $2,400 |

| ElevenLabs | $22 | 4 | $1,600 |

| Midjourney | $30 | 5 | $1,500 |

| Zapier + AI | $50 | 10 | $3,000 |

| ChatGPT Plus | $20 | 5 | $2,000 |

| Replit | $7 | 3 | $1,800 |

| Descript | $15 | 6 | $1,800 |

| TOTAL | $214 | 82 | $39,300 |

Actual spend: $497/month (includes some annual plans paid monthly)

Value generated: ~$39,300/month

ROI: 7,900%

What's Not in the Stack

What I don't pay for:

  • Social media scheduling (Zapier + Buffer free)

Rule: If Zapier can connect two free tools to replace a paid one, do it.

The Workflow: A Day in the Life

8:00 AM: Check overnight metrics (Zapier → Notion dashboard)

8:30 AM: Review Claude Code's overnight work, test changes

9:30 AM: Write content (Notion AI for outlines, ChatGPT for editing)

11:00 AM: Research (Perplexity for technical deep-dives)

12:00 PM: Generate voiceover (ElevenLabs) + thumbnail (Midjourney)

1:00 PM: Lunch

2:00 PM: Code (Cursor + Claude Code)

5:00 PM: Edit video (Descript)

6:00 PM: Publish (Zapier auto-distributes)

6:30 PM: Done.

Total active work: 8 hours/day

Equivalent traditional team: 4–5 people

The Catch

This stack has two failure modes:

1. Tool fatigue

Switching between 10 tools creates context-switching overhead. I batch tasks by tool: all coding in the morning, all content in the afternoon.

2. AI dependency

If Claude goes down, I'm stuck. I keep local alternatives ready (Ollama with Llama 4 for emergency coding, local LLM for writing).

3. Quality ceiling

AI tools get you to 80% quality fast. The last 20% still requires human judgment. I spend 20% of my time on polish that AI can't do.

The Bottom Line

$500/month replaces a $20,000/month team. Not perfectly — but well enough to build a real business.

The solo founder AI stack isn't about replacing humans. It's about amplifying one human to do the work of five.

Start with: Claude Code + Cursor + Perplexity ($60/month)

Add as you grow: Zapier for ops, Midjourney for design

Upgrade when: Revenue justifies it (at $10K MRR, add tools freely)

The future isn't AI replacing founders. It's founders with AI replacing teams.
